CELEBRATING THE JUBILEE OF 150 YEARS OF MILL HILL MISSIONARY SOCIETY AND THE FEAST OF OUR LADY OF PERPETUAL HELP WITH THE FAITHFULL IN VISHUNPUR MISSION, INDIA
Through the Love and Service of our founder, Cardinal Herbert Vaughan, and the great missionaries of our society “St. Joseph’s Society of Mill Hill” has entered the 150th year of its existence. It is a great joy for us young missionaries who are working in different parts of the world to recollect and recall the origin and great services that our society has rendered to the Church and to the world at large. It is a great opportunity for us to celebrate the achievements of our society. Where there is a community there is life, joy, hope and celebration. As the whole society celebrates this jubilee, we in Vishunpur mission also with great hope and joy celebrated it enthusiastically with our small community of faithful at our mission station. The celebration was conducted at the deanary level. Therefore many people from the neighboring parishes also were part of this joyful moment.
It was on 17th July 2016 that in conjunction with our parish feast of “Our Lady of Perpetual Help” we celebrated the 150 years jubilee of Mill Hill Society with the faithful. In the absence of a church building in this mission we celebrated it outside in a tent. From the beginning of this mission, whenever we celebrate this feast, rain has been a cause of disturbance for us but through the intercession of Mary we have always experienced God giving us good weather at the time of the celebration itself. Even this year we had heavy rains the previous day. Therefore we thought the rain would disturb our celebration but we trusted in the providence of God and left everything in His hands. God really helped us with beautiful weather and we had a wonderful celebration. Everyone enjoyed every moment of it. Though it was the rainy season a great number of people witnessed this celebration.
In this area the people have a special devotion to “Our Lady of Perpetual Help”. Therefore we celebrate this feast every year in the mission. At this year’s special; occasion priests and religious from far and near and Mill Hill members also joined us to celebrate with us in our joy. The Rt. Rev. Bishop Patras Minj, the bishop of Ambikapur Diocese, presided over the Holy Eucharist.
Before the celebration of the Eucharist one of our Mill Hill priest read out the history and flourishing of our missionary society. People were very enriched and happy to hear, how zealous and enthusiastic our missionaries were during the early stages of our society to bring the Good News even to the remotest areas of the world where ordinary people hesitate to travel.
The story of the more recent challenge of sowing the seed of the Good News in Vishunpur Mission area of the diocese was well received by the people. This contemporary mission focuses on Love and to Service among the Koraku and Kerva tribes who are considered as lowest cast in the state and give them love and hope in their lives.
After the celebration of the Holy Eucharist we had a few cultural activities to entertain the visitors and the faithful. On this occasion we gave a small gift for the visiting priests and religious as the token of our appreciation of their care, support and encouragement to the mission. Though we have only few catholic families around and many are poor among them, yet everybody co-operated and supported us to make this celebration grand and a wonderful feast. We closed the celebration with a fellowship meal with the faithful.
