Two Colombian Islands with a Surprising Cultural Heritage

Two small islands in the Caribbean called Providencia and San Andres. A new feature film cast a rare spotlight on this forgotten corner of Colombia.

Bill Tollan mhm writes: “We – Mill Hill Missionaries – used to have a mission there. I remember reading the archive material about our presence, and a correspondence with the more recent church leaders there”.

“The creole (pidgin English) spoken in Old Providence shares most of its vocabulary with English, and sounds close to typical Caribbean English, though it borrows certain phrases and grammatical tics from Spanish and a host of African languages”  (The Guardian).
