Weekend Pause for Thought

In God we trust.

Beirut. Lebanon

One of my Palestinian refugee friends asked me, “Is your family Republican or Democrat?”.

“My parents were Republican, except for my mother who was a Democrat,” I said.

“Well as far as we Palestinians are concerned, we say, ‘Republican-Democrat, Pepsi Cola-Coca Cola.” The bottom line is America and American interests first and everybody else on standby.”

“So what?” I said. “Every other country does exactly the same.”

“Yes, but most Americans and American politicians are Christians and proudly so. Why then do they put American interests first and foremost, when Jesus said, ‘Seek first the kingdom of God?’ If you want to have a real democracy in America, your two political parties should be The Party of American Interests and The Party of the Common Good.’ Then people would have a real choice.”

“First of all my friend, I said, “Don’t even mention the name Jesus Christ. In America. We only use his name when we are cursing something or in Church. And don’t forget, we have the doctrine of Separation of Church and State.’ In other words, we don’t allow our religious beliefs to interfere with our political and financial interests. What are you anyway, some kind of communist?”
