The group of Cistercian monks from the Atlas Abbey of Tibhirine in Algeria, whose story was told in the award-winning film ‘Of Gods and Men’ are soon to be recognised as martyrs, Father Thomas Georgeon said on a website run by the Pontifical Institute for Foreign Missions.
The seven monks were kidnapped from their monastery in March 1996. They were found dead two months later.
A bishop, and 11 other religious men and women killed during the civil war are also being recognised as martyrs.
Many thousands died during the ten year conflict. Father Georgeon said: “To pay homage to these 19 Christian martyrs means also paying homage to the memory of all those who gave their life in Algeria (during) those dark years.”
